  • We are also an animal hospital, being able to have a doctor on the premises for any need that arises. You may also have your annual exams and regular check ups accomplished while your pet is at Spring Oaks Animal Care Center being groomed.

  • When should my puppy have its first professional grooming?
Start bringing your pet to the grooming facility as early as possible in life 2 – 3 months of age is bet.  Getting a toe nail trim or just a brush is sufficient for the first few visits.  This allows the pet to familiarize you itself with the sounds and smells of the grooming facility.  Handling your pet by touching the feet, paws, and the ears on a regular basis helps to acclimate your pet to the grooming experience.  Brushing your pet in between groom visits will provide better results, keep your pet healthier and will result in shorter groom times saving you money.
  • Are there some breeds that don’t need grooming?  Isn’t it true that grooming is more important in the warm months?
All breeds of dogs and cats can benefit from regular grooming.  Some pets require grooming every month and some as little as twice a year.  Our Master Groomer can provide recommendations appropriate to the coat, lifestyle, and behavior of your pet.  Regular grooming benefits your pet by reducing the amount of shedding, dander, matting and odor.  Matting can cause skin irritations and discomfort for your pet.

A common misconception is that in the winter months, your pet should skip the grooming process in order to stay warm.  Not true, very few dogs have a sufficient coat to keep them warm during the winter temperatures.  If it is truly cold the pet should wear a coat.

  • My dog has a very strong odor.  Bathing doesn’t seem to help.  Why?
It is possible that your dog has some skin, ear, or mouth issues that need to be evaluated by a veterinarian.  Spring Oaks Animal Care Center has a veterinarian on duty to examine and discuss treatments for your pet while they are at the grooming facility.   Special medicated shampoos are available to be used to help treat mild skin conditions.  Preventative dental care products are available for purchase as well as plaque and fluoride treatment during your regularly scheduled grooming visit.

  • What are anal glands?
They are small glands that are located on either side of the rectum in both feline and canine species.  Animals use the anal gland secretion to mark their territory.  These glands are usually expressed during defecation, however sometimes the pet is unable to do so.  Your pet may scoot its anal area on the floor trying to express the anal glands themselves.  Regular expression of the anal glands is an included step of our grooming process.

  • Why do my dog’s nail get so long?
Nails grow continuously, without the proper care, they can become overgrown, infected and grow into the pads causing pain and discomfort.  Most dogs that are walked on hard concrete surfaces wear the nails down on their own.  Our groomer will trim the nails to an appropriate length.

  • Should my cat be groomed?
Long haired cats sometimes need grooming to assist with the removal of mats and tangles.  Our Master groomer can assist you with determining ways to help manage your cats hair coat in a stress free environment.

  • What if my pet has fleas?
Each pet that is found to have evidence of fleas, will be administered an oral tablet, Capstar.  This is a completely safe product that ensures a quick kill to the fleas without harming your pet.  Frontline, Advantage, Comfortis, and Capstar are available for purchase at Spring Oaks Animal Care Center.

Remember, Frontline and Advantage need to be administered 48 hours after a bath or 48 hours prior to a bath to be completely effective.  A soap free shampoo is used at our grooming facility so that the hair coat is not stripped of the essential oils the body makes which transports the topical fleas prevention for total body protection.  Capstar and Comfortis are flea products that are taken orally for flea elimination.
